This basement remodel was part of a whole-home renovation in West Chester, Pennsylvania, serving homeowners throughout Chester County and the Main Line area.
When my client described his vision for the space, the brief was short but memorable:
A country club feel… and 80s pinball.
At first glance those ideas might sound unrelated — even contradictory — but they actually set the tone for a space designed entirely around entertaining.

Reimagining an Underused Basement
Before the renovation, the basement included a movie-style media area and several underutilized spaces that didn’t encourage people to gather or interact.
The goal was to transform the lower level into a place where friends and family would naturally want to spend time together — something that felt more like a private lounge than a typical basement.

Creating a Club-Inspired Atmosphere
To achieve that club-inspired feel, the design focused on darker tones, layered lighting, warm wood accents, and reflective surfaces that add depth and richness to the space.
And leather. Lots of leather.
The bar island was wrapped in textured stone, giving it weight and presence while reinforcing the feeling of a classic club bar.
Mirrors behind the bar serve two purposes. They reference traditional club interiors while also reflecting light throughout the room and visually connecting the bar area with the pinball and gaming space.

Dark walls became the common thread tying the entire basement together. While many homeowners hesitate to use darker colors in a basement, in this case they created exactly the right atmosphere — rich, moody, and inviting.
Layered lighting and carefully chosen artwork — including patent illustrations that nod to invention and craftsmanship — help unify the space without making it feel themed or overly decorative.

Blending Old and New
One of the most enjoyable parts of the design was blending traditional and modern elements.
As you descend the stairs, a custom record nook draws the eye and introduces the character of the basement before you even enter the room.
Vintage records and a record player found a new home in a custom record nook — created by removing an underutilized closet that had previously made the stair landing feel cramped.
The nook was designed to draw the eye as you descend the stairs and to introduce the character of the basement before you even enter the room, creating a small moment within the larger space.

Nearby, a reclaimed church pew adds a touch of history and personality, while contemporary lighting and custom millwork keep the room feeling fresh and current.
This mix of old and new keeps the basement from feeling staged or overly designed. Instead, it feels personal and authentic to the homeowners.
A Basement Designed for Entertaining
The real test of the design came during the homeowners’ first gathering after the renovation. By the end of the evening, most of the guests had naturally migrated downstairs — exactly the reaction the homeowners were hoping for. What was once an underused basement is now one of the most active spaces in the house.
Thoughtful basement design can transform a forgotten lower level into one of the most enjoyable areas of the home. In this West Chester project, the result is a basement that works as a lounge, game room, and entertaining space — all in one.
