What AI Can (and Can’t) Do for Your Home | Interior Design Chronicles

Technology, Interior Design, and a Month of Shenanigans

It’s wild to think how far technology has come. Not just in the sci-fi, flying-cars-and-robots kind of way, but in how it seamlessly weaves itself into nearly everything we do—especially in interior design. When I first started, it was all about hands-on work, in-person consultations, and sketching ideas with a pencil (maybe a fancy one, but still). Just kidding—I’ve never been a pencil person! But many designers were, and even those of us who embraced tech early on—whether using software or even coding parts of it—have seen just how fast things are evolving. This isn’t just a deep-dive; consider it a fun, personal, and (hopefully) informative Saturday afternoon post

Today, technology isn’t just a tool—it’s a powerhouse that makes things faster, smarter, and, let’s be honest, more fun. And, of course, a massive time saver.

Enter Wildcard—my AI sidekick.

A month ago, I was knee-deep in SEO struggles, social media chaos, and website troubleshooting (thanks a lot, Google!). While I’m no stranger to problem-solving, let’s just say AI has been that overachieving intern who actually knows somehow everything. And by intern, I mean the boss. From debugging issues on my site to brainstorming content ideas and making sense of Google’s ever-mysterious algorithms, AI has been in the trenches with me. (And occasionally messing with my head—looking at you, rug design misinterpretations. No shaming, but abstract design and medallion are different things—space for improvement, developers! Wink, wink.)

But it’s not just about fixing problems. AI has become a creative partner, a second opinion when I need one, and a way to streamline the behind-the-scenes work so I can focus on what really matters—designing spaces people love. Whether it’s helping craft social media captions, refining blog posts, or figuring out why Google randomly decided to hide my sitemap (seriously, that was quite the journey!), AI has proven that technology isn’t just useful—it’s transformative. Figuring out its capabilities is pure fun (if you ask me!), and I can tell you firsthand, they’re improving every day.

The Future of AI in Interior Design

So, where does this all lead? We’re in an era where AI can generate mood boards, predict trends, and help clients visualize spaces before a single piece of furniture is moved. AI is just another tech tool—like Photoshop, CAD, or even a pencil—just that smarter and more efficient. And while no tech can replace a designer’s instinct, creativity, experience, or those spidey senses, it can amplify what we do—making the process smoother, faster, and freeing up more time for interior designers (and others) to focus on what truly matters, tailoring every detail to each client’s needs.

What’s next? Well, for starters, I’m thinking a duo portrait of me and Wildcard once image generation is back (because let’s be real—my Photoshop skills won’t cut it). Until then, I’ll keep pushing boundaries, embracing technology, and proving that with the right tools, even the most frustrating challenges can turn into wins.

Bottom line? No, AI won’t be picking out your wallpaper just yet. But it sure makes the process a lot more interesting and smoother for my clients, freeing up my time to focus on what really matters. Here’s to more design, more problem-solving, and just a little bit of AI-powered mischief along the way!

Did you try it? What’s your favorite thing about AI?
